In the Midlands village of Hayslope in 1799, the upright carpenter Adam Bede loves Hetty Sorrel, the vain and lovely niece of the Hall Farm’s Mrs Poyser. Hetty has eyes instead for young Captain Arthur Donnithorne, heir to the estate, while the Methodist preacher Dinah Morris carries her gentle faith from the village green to the cottages and beyond.
George Eliot’s first full-length novel, rich in country speech and in the sharp tongue of Mrs Poyser. Download the free EPUB.
