Stephens travelled cheaply and wrote bluntly: Montevideo and Buenos Aires, the pampas and the estancias, up the Paraná into Paraguay, then across to Chile — with the fares, the hotels, the food and the swindles all named, and none of the diplomatic softening usual in the genre.
