Unlike the travellers who wrote the other volumes of this illustrated series, Howard Willoughby lived in Australia, and he surveys the continent from the inside: its shape and climate, its people, and then colony by colony from Victoria and New South Wales outward. Gold rushes, bush life, cities, wildlife and the Aboriginal peoples all appear, with engravings from the Melbourne illustrated press.
A detailed portrait of Australia in the 1880s, its colonial assumptions very much of the period. Download the free EPUB.
