In 1859 the young Samuel Butler sailed for New Zealand and set out to make his fortune as a sheep farmer in the Canterbury hills. His letters home describe the voyage, the raw settlement of Christchurch, exploring for unclaimed land, fording flooded rivers and living in a V-hut. This edition adds other pieces he wrote in New Zealand and at Cambridge.
Butler’s first book, and the landscape that later became Erewhon; essential for his admirers and for colonial history. Download the free EPUB.
