S. H. M. Byers, the Union soldier who wrote the song ‘Sherman’s March to the Sea’, served nearly twenty years as American consul in Switzerland and Italy from 1869. Drawing on his diary, he recalls the Franco-Prussian War, the birth of the German Empire and of a united Italy, hunting parties in the Black Forest, and many noted people, with some fifty letters from General Sherman.
Engaging recollections of Europe in a pivotal era, valuable for its glimpse of Sherman in private. Download the free EPUB.
