Samuelson wrote to introduce English readers to a country so little known that letters to Bucharest were sometimes sent to Bokhara. The first part describes Roumania as it then was, its geography, Danube navigation, towns, trade, peasant farming, schools and courts; the second tells its history from the Getae and the Romans through the princes of Wallachia and Moldavia.
