In August 1817 the young Washington Irving arrived at Abbotsford with a letter of introduction and spent several days with Walter Scott, walking the Border country and hearing his stories. The second part describes Irving’s later stay at Newstead Abbey, the ruined priory and ancestral home of Lord Byron, with its gardens, old servants, superstitions and the nearby Annesley Hall of Byron’s early love.
