Bickmore sailed to Amboina in the 1860s to collect again the shells pictured by the old Dutch naturalist Rumphius, and the Dutch authorities gave him every facility to travel on. He describes the Strait of Sunda and Batavia, Samarang and Surabaya, the flora and fauna of the tropics, Celebes and Timor, and the Spice Islands of Amboina, the Uliassers and Ceram.
