Between 1882 and 1884 the consular officer Alexander Hosie made three long journeys through south-western China, by boat through the Yangtze gorges and overland through Sichuan, Guizhou and Yunnan to Ta-li. He records trade, salt and opium, the minority peoples of the hills, local customs and the landscape in careful detail.
