In 1873 Manning travelled from Jaffa to Hebron, Bethlehem and the Dead Sea, up the Jordan to Jerusalem, and north through Samaria and Galilee, setting each place beside the Scripture narratives it illustrates. His purpose is to show how closely the land matches the Book, and the illustrations put the scenes before the reader.
