On his first visit to the East in 1906–7, the designer and illustrator Walter Crane travelled from Bombay and the Ellora caves through Ahmedabad, Ajmer, Chitorgarh, Udaipur, Jaipur and Agra, then on to Ceylon. He records temples, palaces, crafts, street life and the comic side of travel, with sketches made on the spot.
