In 1899 the Canadian government sent commissioners north from Edmonton to make Treaty 8 with the First Nations of the Athabasca and Peace River country and to settle Métis claims. The poet Charles Mair went with them as secretary, and he describes the trail to Lesser Slave Lake, the treaty councils, the missions and posts, and the land itself, with notes on its mammals and birds.
A first-hand record of a treaty still central to northern Alberta, valuable to historians and travellers alike. Download the free EPUB.
