After a historical sketch of the continent, Van Dyke takes each republic in turn, beginning with Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay. He describes cities, ports, railways, industries and landscapes, with notes on figures such as San Martín, whose crossing of the Andes he recalls at Mendoza. John Barrett of the Pan American Union contributes the introduction.
