Sent by the Post Office to the Caribbean in 1858–59, Trollope begins writing on a becalmed brig fed on yams and salt pork. He reports on Jamaica, its towns, countryside and sugar estates, Cuba, British Guiana with its drains and canals, and the isthmus of Central America, with frank opinions on everything from planters to the economics of free labour.
Lively and opinionated, Trollope himself rated it among his best work; its views on race reflect a Victorian imperialist and are often offensive. Download the free EPUB.
