Thomas Gage sailed from Spain in 1625 as a Dominican missionary and spent twelve years in New Spain, much of it in the Indian towns around Guatemala. Returning to England a Protestant, he described the voyage, Mexico City, the provinces, the missions, the wealth of the colonies and their weaknesses, along with the making of chocolate.
