Commissioned by Harper’s Monthly, Warner travelled through the South in 1885 and again in 1887, and later through the Midwest and into Canada, reporting on society in the New South, New Orleans and a voodoo dance, the Acadian country of Louisiana, booming cities and building societies, aiming at better understanding between the sections twenty years after the war.
