Over several seasons the University of Chicago anthropologist travelled through Oaxaca, Chiapas, Puebla and Michoacán to measure and photograph the physical types of southern Mexico’s Indian peoples, Mixes, Tarascans and many others. His narrative records mule roads, village officials, fiestas, priests and the difficulties of persuading people to be studied; its racial science and attitudes are those of 1908.
A detailed travel record of rural Mexico before the Revolution, valuable for its observation more than its theory. Download the free EPUB.
