Major William Gray and Staff Surgeon Dochard led a British expedition that set out from the Gambia in 1818 to reach the Niger. Gray records their slow progress through Woolli, Bondoo, Galam, Kasson and Kaarta, their dealings with local rulers, the sickness that dogged them, and the peoples, trade and religion they encountered.
