The novel opens with the Nore mutiny of 1797, when forty thousand seamen turned against the officers the nation relied on. One of its leaders leaves behind a small son, who is taken into the very service his father defied, and the story follows the boy through frigate actions, prizes and privateers to manhood at sea.
