In the reign of William III, Lieutenant Vanslyperken commands the cutter Yungfrau between Portsmouth and Holland, a miserly, cowardly officer devoted only to his hideous dog Snarleyyow, which the crew believe to be a fiend. While the sailors scheme to be rid of the animal, Vanslyperken courts a rich widow and becomes entangled with Jacobite conspirators.
