In Chamisso’s tale Peter Schlemihl sells his shadow to a mysterious man in grey for a purse that never empties, and finds himself shunned wherever the sun shines. Hauff’s Black Forest story follows a poor charcoal-burner tempted to trade his living heart for a heart of stone and the riches that come with it.
