Duncan Campbell, son of a poor Highland laird in Argyll, is born with a strain of second sight and hears the ominous sound of a galloping horse. Taking a post as tutor at Hilton Hall in England, he falls in love with the mysterious Lady Alice, a somnambulist, and is drawn into the shadows of her family. Other tales follow, among them a German story of a cruel painter.
