The editor presents an extraordinary tale for an age of doubt: the history of a strange man haunted by a family legend and a spectral visitor, whose name reversed spells Ettelavar. The story moves through love for the beautiful Eulampéa, the Egyptian galleries of the Louvre and the circle of Napoleon III, and opens into a long account of the Rosicrucians and their mysteries.
