Carson Napier, an adventurer schooled in telepathy, builds a torpedo-shaped rocket bound for Mars, miscalculates, and comes down instead on Venus, a world of giant trees under perpetual cloud. Among the Vepajans he meets a forbidden princess in a walled garden, hunts the savage basto, and is carried off to sea aboard the pirate ship Sofal.
