Since childhood the narrator has dreamed not as other people do but in the memories of a forebear called Big-Tooth, who lived among a tree-dwelling horde. Through those inherited visions he recounts friendship with Lop-Ear, the terror of the brutal Red-Eye, and the menace of the more advanced Fire People.
