Drawing largely on his own experience in the mines, Homer Greene gives an outline of coal for general readers: what it is made of, when and how the beds were laid down, how they lie in the earth, and how coal was discovered and brought into use. He then takes the reader down the shaft to explain the work of the miners and the dangers of blasting and gas.
