John Josselyn, who spent years in Maine in the mid-seventeenth century, published one of the earliest accounts of the natural history of New England. He describes its birds, beasts, fish, serpents and insects, and its plants, with notes on how the Native peoples and colonists used them as food and medicine. Edward Tuckerman’s 1865 edition adds an introduction and notes.

A quaint, valuable record of how the first English settlers saw the New World; its remedies are period lore, not medical advice. Download the free EPUB.
