The Harvard geologist Nathaniel Shaler asks how humans won the partnership of other species and what it has done for both. He discusses the dog and its intelligence, the horse, cattle, sheep and beasts of burden, domesticated birds, useful insects such as bees and silkworms, the problem of why so few animals have been tamed, and the rights we owe to animals.
A thoughtful nineteenth-century essay on domestication, with an early plea for animal welfare. Download the free EPUB.
