Darwin’s Coral Reefs (1842) proposed that fringing reefs, barrier reefs and atolls are three stages of one process: coral growing upward as the volcanic island beneath it slowly sinks. He worked it out largely before seeing a true atoll, and deep drilling confirmed it a century later.
