William Harvey’s An Anatomical Disquisition on the Motion of the Heart and Blood in Animals (1628) overturned fifteen centuries of Galenic medicine: by dissection, ligature experiments and a simple calculation of volume, Harvey proved that blood circulates in a closed loop driven by the heart.
