Born blind on a country estate, Petrùsya grows up loved by his mother Anna Michàilovna and guided by his crippled uncle Maxim, an old soldier who resolves to make him strong. Through the melodies of a stable-hand’s pipe, a first friendship with a neighbour girl, love and a spiritual crisis, the boy struggles to understand a world he cannot see.
