The story opens at the back door of the old Lansing house, where the formidable Miss Temperance Tribbey is boiling preserves when Sidney Martin comes up the avenue. Sidney’s hopes soon centre on the proud and beautiful Vashti, whose strange inheritance of will gives the book its title, while Temperance watches over him with a shrewd, pitying eye.
