Written by an unknown Franciscan, probably in 1227 and sometimes attributed to John of Parma, the Sacrum Commercium tells how Francis and his brothers seek out Lady Poverty on a high mountain and win her as their bride. Montgomery Carmichael’s translation carries the scriptural echoes of the original, and he adds an account of its editions and a discussion of evangelical poverty.
A small jewel of early Franciscan spirituality, for readers drawn to Saint Francis and medieval religious allegory. Download the free EPUB.
