John Chambers was born in Ireland in 1797, grew up in an Ohio log cabin, studied in Baltimore and was turned away at Newtown before building his long ministry in Philadelphia. Griffis, who remembers the church’s prayer meetings and lay speakers at first hand, follows the pastor from childhood to the height of his influence.
An affectionate portrait of nineteenth-century Philadelphia church life by the author of The Mikado’s Empire. Download the free EPUB.
