Nassau sailed for the island of Corisco in 1861 and spent some forty years as a Presbyterian missionary in what is now Gabon and Equatorial Guinea. Here he records what he learned of local beliefs about spirits, amulets, witchcraft, the dead and the powers of the medicine man, with stories and native accounts. His judgements are a missionary’s of 1904, not an anthropologist’s of today.
A detailed early record of West African religion by an observer who knew the languages, read with its period outlook in mind. Download the free EPUB.
