Catharine Beecher, daughter of the preacher Lyman Beecher and pioneer of women’s education, argues that ordinary people have the right and the ability to interpret the Bible for themselves. She examines the Augustinian theory of the origin of evil, its place in the creeds and the way theologians defend it, and contends that it violates the moral sense of mankind.
