Steve Clarney, an American adventurer, and his Afghan companion Yar Ali cross the Arabian sands in search of a lost city of black stone and the flaming jewel said to rest in the hand of a dead king. They find it, along with Bedouin raiders and a guardian far older than either of them. Weird Tales published it in December 1936, months after Howard’s death.
