Deep in the war between America and the Soviets, the whole population lives in vast shelters far below ground, cheered by news of enemy cities pounded flat. The fighting on the radioactive surface is left to robots called leadys, who report back faithfully. When a leady sent down for inspection raises awkward questions, an officer named Taylor goes up to see the world for himself.
