When only robots have flown, young Lieutenant Ed McCauley volunteers to be the first man launched in a rocket. The book follows his career through the first flights, spacewalks and drifting crewmates, construction of a station and the reach toward the Moon, with each episode turning on an engineering problem solved under pressure.
