Written in 1926 when a non-medical analyst was prosecuted in Vienna, Freud’s essay takes the form of a dialogue with an impartial listener, explaining what psychoanalysis is and arguing that its practitioners need not be physicians. This 1927 American edition, introduced by Sándor Ferenczi, adds Freud’s An Autobiographical Study.
