The first part of Alfred Noyes’s trilogy The Torch-Bearers, this long poem tells the story of astronomy as a torch passed from hand to hand. Copernicus, Tycho Brahe, Kepler, Galileo, Newton and the Herschels speak and struggle in turn, against envy, doubt and persecution, to bring order out of the heavens.
