Stevenson borrowed his title from Ben Jonson and divided the book in two: a first part of lyrics, epistles and self-portraits in English, and a second written in the Lowland Scots of his boyhood. It opens with a warm prose dedication to the doctors who kept an invalid poet alive, and its pages range from Edinburgh and the Pentlands to San Francisco.
Intimate, wry and often moving, it shows the author of Treasure Island at his most personal. Download the free EPUB.
