A jockey dreams that dead riders on dead horses will lead him home in his final race, and the title ballad follows him onto the course. Around it Paterson gathers verses of drovers, shearers, droughts and bush towns: Mulga Bill wrestling his new bicycle, Saltbush Bill’s fighting rooster, Father Riley’s horse, and the dry country of Booligal.
