The title poem was written for the fiftieth anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation, a hymn to Black Americans’ claim on their country. Around it stand ‘O Black and Unknown Bards’, a tribute to the makers of the spirituals, poems on the South and on a colour sergeant, and a section of lighter dialect verse.
The first collection of the poet who wrote ‘Lift Every Voice and Sing’, with an introduction by Brander Matthews. Download the free EPUB.
