Horace Milliken, a wealthy City widower, is ruled at home by his mother-in-law, Lady Kicklebury, and his own mother, while his children’s governess, Miss Prior, is courted, suspected and plotted against by everyone in the house. Thackeray’s two-act comedy of domestic intrigue was later reworked into his novel Lovel the Widower.
