Kingsley’s verse play follows Elizabeth of Hungary, a king’s daughter married into the court of Thuringia, from her girlhood in 1220 through her devoted marriage, her lavish charity to the poor and her widowhood. Resented by courtiers who call her a foreign gipsy and ruled by an ascetic confessor, she gives up everything in pursuit of holiness.
Kingsley’s first major work, published in 1848 with a preface by F. D. Maurice, and a sharp Victorian look at medieval sainthood. Download the free EPUB.
