Captain Plume and his crafty Sergeant Kite arrive in Shrewsbury to enlist soldiers by any trick they can, while Plume courts the heiress Silvia and his friend Worthy pursues the proud Melinda. Disguises, a fake fortune-teller, a rival captain and a cross-dressed heroine keep the comedy spinning along the banks of the Severn.
A favourite comedy of the early eighteenth-century stage, here with Mrs. Inchbald’s remarks. Download the free EPUB.
