Ermyntrude, a clergyman’s penniless widowed daughter, takes a post as maid to a princess at a hotel, and finds herself facing the Inca of Perusalem, a bombastic emperor responsible for sixty millions of subjects who must die at his command. Written while the war was still raging, the playlet treats the all-powerful Kaiser as a vain, lonely and surprisingly human comedian.
A short, cheeky Shaw comedy whose preface explains why he refused to be afraid of the enemy. Download the free EPUB.
