In a New Hampshire town during the American Revolution, Dick Dudgeon, the black sheep of a grim Puritan family, scandalises everyone by declaring himself the devil’s disciple. When British soldiers come to arrest Pastor Anderson, Dick lets them take him instead, to the bewilderment of the pastor’s wife Judith, and the urbane General Burgoyne presides over the consequences.
One of Shaw’s most popular plays, a melodrama turned inside out, with his notes on Burgoyne. Download the free EPUB.
