Bergson contends that psychology goes wrong by treating feelings as quantities and inner life as a row of separate states laid out like points in space. Real conscious time, which he calls duration, is a flowing whole in which successive sounds melt into one another, and once this is seen the old dispute between determinists and their opponents dissolves.

Bergson’s doctoral thesis of 1889, translated by F. L. Pogson with the author’s help, and the root of his later philosophy. Download the free EPUB.
